by Tommy Wells

Everything turned out perfect for Fiona Phelan on Saturday at the Class 1A-2A-3A State Cross Country Championships in Anchorage
The weather was perfect.
The trail was perfect.
All of that helped the talented Bethel Regional High School freshman race her way to a top 50 finish and helped spur the Lady Warriors roll to a top 10 finish in the team standings. BRHS rolled up 272 points.
Phelan more than held her own in her first appearance in the state meet. She conquered the 5-kilometer race with relative ease, running with the lead pack for much of the first 2-kilometers. One of four Bethel runners to finish in the top 100, she powered her way to 47th in the final standings with a time of 23 minutes, 9 seconds.
Lindsey Beans-Polk and Kelsie Madson also turned in strong performances. Beans-Polk raced her way to 59th with a mark of 24:02. Madson was 83rd at 24:58.
Cadence Cedars and Dellarae Charlie rounded out the Lady Warriors’ efforts. Cedars completed race with a time of 25:15 and placed 89th. Charlie was 112th at 26:29.
Kenai, paced by a winning run from senior Jaycie Calvert of 19:22, captured the top spot in the girls’ team standings. The Lady Kardinals, in their first year at the 3A ranks, finished with 36 points. Grace Christian and Homer finished second and third, respectively.
Scammon Bay’s Leah Amukon turned in the top performance from the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta villages. The SCHS standout raced her way to 61st in the girls’ standings with a time of 24:15. Her finish was six spots ahead of Akiachak’s Acacia Chingliak, who turned in a mark of 24:28.
Mt. Edgecumbe runner Brystel Charlie of Kwethluk finished with a time of 22:31, placing 36th.
Tillie Titus and Adam Kaganak also did well for the Scammon Bay. Titus sprinted to 70th with a time of 24:35. Kaganak was 118th at 27:40.
Like Scammon, Akiachak had three runners participate in the state race. Joining Chingliak in the field were Keitha Phillip, who finished 115th at 26:46, and Shayna Evan, who placed 122nd at 27:56.
Chevak’s Charity Boyscout-Homer and Hooper Bay’s Rose Lake also finished in the top 100. Boyscout-Homer was 94th at 25:37. Lake was 99th at 25:46.
Tununak and Kongiganak had two runners do well in the 3.1-mile race. Tununak’s Reann Lincoln raced to 100th in the standings with a season’s best mark of 25:48, while Amanda Kanrilak was 101st at 25:59. Kongiganak’s Elsa Tinker was 114th at 26:42, while Shayna Evan was 122nd at 27:56.
