Lady Warriors is #4 team at spring State Wrestling Meet

The Bethel Regional High School girls wrestlers placed fourth overall at the 2021 Division II State Wrestling Tournament this past weekend, hosted by the Alaska Schools Activities Association and Chugiak High School.

The Lathrop Malemutes of Fairbanks won first. Coming in second were their close neighbors, the North Pole Patriots. Placing third was Colony High School.

Senior Rebecca Samuelson was the highest placing wrestler for BRHS. She placed 2nd overall in a tough bracket. She defeated Ally Hrncir of Palmer High School, Jamie Early of Wrangell, and Anya Pingayak in the quarter and semifinals. In the championship bout she fell to Trinity Donovan of Soldotna with one second left on the clock.

In the 103 lb. division Dellarae Charlie had a victory in round two over Lindsey Schuerch of Kiana, winning by major decision. She lost in round one to DD Toyomura of Petersburg and in round 3 to Claire Fry of Nome.

Emilie Madson wrestled in the 112 lb. bracket placing 6th overall. She was 1-3 with a win against teammate Kendal Herron in the consolation finals in a close match 9-8. She fell to Thresa Savo of Colony in the quarterfinals and also in the 5th place match. Carson Adams of West Anchorage also won their match in the consolation finals.

Wrestling in the 125 lb. division was Fiona Phelan, she placed 5th with 4 wins and 2 losses. She won by fall over Nevaeh Maxon of Colony High School. Phelan lost in the quarterfinals to Kierstyn Bockert of Lathrop. She came back with a win against Adelle Patterson of Hutchison High School in the consolations round 2 and another win in round 3 against Zoe Covington of Colony. In the consolation semifinals Katie Smith of Nome High School 9-3 defeated Phelan. She won the 5th place match by forfeit over Bayleigh Harrington of Wasilla.

Kaeli Amik originally of Kwigillingok placed 5th overall. She defeated Faith Walker of Redington in the opening round. She lost to Liana Carney of Wrangell in the quarterfinals then won her next two bouts in the consolation bracket against Venice Cabugao of Bartlett High and McKenzie Hayes of Lathrop. In the consolation semis she fell to Kaitlyn Cottrell of Colony. Kaeli came back to win over Maysa Brown of East Anchorage High School for 5th place.

Beth Hensley also competed in the 135 lb. weight class. Jaron Mute also wrestled (130 lb.) but was sidelined due to injury. Also wrestling in the 145 lb. division was Isabel Lieb.
