NYO comes to Bethel, fourteen teams compete in 11 events

The Chefornak Shamans are the winners of the Bethel Regional High School Native Youth Olympics (NYO) Invitational event this past weekend at the WarriorDome. They also took home the Sportsmanship Award, congratulations! Varsity and junior high teams from Akiuk, Akula, Ayaprun Elitnaurvik, Chefornak, Gladys Jung, Goodnews Bay, Kipnuk, Nunapitchuk, Quinhagak, Kwethluk, Toksook Bay, Unalakleet, and Tuntutuliak joined the Bethel Warriors host team to compete in 11 NYO events, April 5-6, 2024.

The Chefornak Lady Shamans dominated the games and scored the most points despite having only three on their roster. They made 88 points for their team and helped to win the tournament’s 1st place award.

The top boys scorers were the Kipnuk Falcons with 74, they placed second overall as a team. The Tuntutuliak Bluejays came in third.

Ourea Busk of Unalakleet jumped a distance of 27’ 9” in the girls Scissor Broad Jump event, nearly two feet beyond the second place jumper. She also placed first in the Alaskan High Kick with a final kick of 68”.

Kipnuk Lady Falcon Deann Martin hit 58” in the 1-Arm Reach with only one miss. Chloe Wassillie of Akiuk also hit 58” but had two misses.

Bethel’s Jordan Klejka hit 85” in the 1-Foot High Kick event to win the gold medal. She also won the 2-Foot Hick Kick with a final kick of 74”.

Seal hopper Shawna Paul of Kipnuk is within striking distance of the state seal hop record. She won the gold with her stunning hop of 153’ 8 2/8”. The girls state Seal Hop record is 160’ 9 ½” held by Dajan Treder of Anchorage (2012).

On the boys side, notable results include:

Daylon Brown of Quinhagak hit 91” in the Alaskan High Kick, just two inches shy of the 93” state record held by Andrew White (2009) and Yako McCarr (2010) both representing the Lower Kuskowkim School District (LKSD).

Andrew Paul of Kipnuk won the gold medal with his 65” reach in the boys 1-Arm Reach event.

Both Ashton White of Tuntutuliak and Daylon Brown of Quinhagak reached the stratospheric height of 101” inches in the 1-Foot High Kick. White won the gold medal with zero misses. Brown had only 1 miss.

Kipnuk’s Devon Mann, the reigning state champion, seal hopped a distance of 125’ 4 4/8”. He is poised for another state gold medal in this event.

The LKSD District NYO meet is up next, to be held in Kipnuk, home of the Falcons this coming weekend. The statewide NYO meet will be on April 25-27, 2024 at the Alaska Airlines Center.
