Nelson Island muskox permits to be available in Bethel, Chefornak and online

Fifty-six (56) permits will be available first-come first-serve basis for Unit 18 muskox hunts. There will be 25 permits for RX070 (bull), and 31 permits for RX071 (cow). Only one permit per household is allowed. All hunters who are successful in getting a permit will also need to buy a muskox metal locking tag and a 2023 hunting license before hunting. The fees for a registration muskox metal locking tag are $25 for resident and $2,200 for nonresident.

• Two (2) registration permits (1 bull, and 1 cow) will be available in person at the Bethel Fish and Game office beginning January 4, 2023, at 8 am. (Available to Alaska Residents and Nonresident)

• Seven (7) registration permits (3 bull, and 4 cow) will be available online http://hunt.alaska.gov beginning January 18, 2023, at 9am. (Available to Alaska Residents only)

• Forty-seven (47) registration permits (21 bulls and 26 cows) will be available in Chefornak on January 25, 2023, at 12pm. (Available to Alaska Residents and Nonresidents)

During the 2022 Nelson Island muskox minimum count we observed a total of 78 groups of muskoxen totaling 513 animals. The mature bull to mature cow ratio was 51B:100C and the calf to mature cow ratio was 66c:100C. Composition of the animals that were counted are: 81 bulls 3-years and older, 158 cows 3-years and older, 79 2-year-olds, 91 yearlings, 104 calves of the year. The muskox population on Nelson Island is now at the upper end of our management goal.
