Bethel Survivors of Suicide Support Group
In Southwestern Alaska, the rate of suicide related deaths continues to rise. Grief for the victim is apparent, but more often than not the loss of a loved one affects not just one person, but a community.
The community of Bethel has decided to take a step in the direction of prevention. By meeting once a month, the Bethel Survivors of Suicide Support Group offers a lending a hand for those who have lost a loved one to suicide. Those affected by suicide may experience guilt, blame, shock, and a sense of helplessness, further delaying the healing process in moving on with ones life.
“We want to ensure a secure place in the community for survivors to share their loss with others who have experienced the same thing” said Peter Hergenroether, a Crisis Incident Stress Management (CISM) Coordinator for YKHC.
Survivors involved in the group noted that it was comforting to be in a room of people who actually understand what they were going through. One member said that attending a survivors group gave them hope that they too could survive the grief. Groups are open to all adult survivors of suicide. If you or a loved one are interested in attending the Bethel Survivors of Suicide Support Group, please contact Jennifer at 543-6424 or Peter at 543-6093.
