Unalakleet, Kalskag post solid showings at state tournaments
ANCHORAGE - The Unlakleet Wolfpack and Kalskag Lady Grizzlies both turned in stellar outings this week and nailed down impressive finishes at the 2011 ASAA Mixed 6 and Class 1A/2A state volleyball tournaments.
Unalakleet, led by the play of Stuart Towarak, Donald Erickson and Jennie Katchatag, placed third in the final team standings in the Mixed 6 toutnament. The Wolfpack went 2-1 in the tournament, including a 25-17, 25-13 and 25-15 win over Aniak in the third-place match on Saturday.
Katchatag was tabbed the Best Defensive Player by tournament officials, Towarak and Erickson were both all-tournament picks.
Unalakleet opened the tournament with a win over Marshall on Thursday, claiming a 25-9, 25-11, 25-19 victory. The Wolfpack suffered a loss to eventual Mixed 6 champion Glacier View on Friday and fell into the third-place bout against Aniak, which had suffered a second-round loss to Napaaqtugmuit.
The Halfbreeds had opened the tournament with a tough 25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-8 win over the Scammon Bay Blackbirds.
Marshall and Scammon Bay both went 0-2 in tournament play.
Kalskag went 2-1 over the weekend and fourth in the Class 1A-2A standings.
Kalskag opened the tournament on a sour note, dropping a 3-1 decision to Cook Inlet Academy on Thursday.
The Lady Grizzlied hit stride from there. They moved into the consolation finals with a 25-12, 24-26, 26-24, 25-17 win over Skagway on Friday.
In the consolation finals, the Aniak High School spikers claimed a thrilling 25-15, 13-25, 21-25, 25-20, 15-8 win over Lumen Christi of Anchorage. Klawock won the Class 1A-2A state crown, defeating Kenny Lake.
