Chavez spurs Lady Warriors to return to state meet

NEW STUYAHOK - Tanya Chavez and the Bethel Regional High School Lady Warriors etched themselves deep into the Lady Warriors’ cross country history books on Saturday afternoon by becoming the latest in a long line of BRHS squads to earn a berth in the Class 1-2-3A state cross country meet.

The Lady Warriors, paced by a stellar effort from Tanya Chavez, rolled to the Region I South Cross Country title with ease. Bethel had six runners place finish among the top 17 places en route to staging an easy victory in the team standings. The Lady Warriors’ 44 total points was 50 better than second-place finisher the Chevak Comets.

Overall, more than 50 runners from throughout western and southwestern Alaska participated in the meet. The top 7 team runners and the to 15 individual runners will be headed to the State 2011 Cross Country meet on the Bartlett High School trails on October 1st.

Chavez highlighted Bethel’s efforts over the 5-kilometer race. She finished second in the individual standings with a time of 23 minutes and 44 seconds. Her time last year at State was 23:55.

Dillingham’s Jordan Lisac won the Region I South individual honors with a time of 23:06. Lisac and Chavez exchanged the lead several times during the exciting race.

Bethel had two other runners finish in the top 10, including Chelsea Beans-Polk and Nicole Jimmie. Beans-Polk placed seventh with a time of 25:01, while Jimmie checked in eighth at 25:07.

The Lady Warriors also picked up solid outings from Kate McWilliams and Elizabeth Lindley. McWilliams posted a time of 26 minutes and finished 13th overall. Lindley was 14th at 26:02.

Chanel Simon also posted a top 20 effort for the BRHS girls. Although she was not among the first five Lady Warriors’ to complete the race, she was 17th overall at 26:27.

Chevak standouts Tess Hardiman-Agimuk placed 5th overall with a time of 24:40. Summer Ulroan and Ida Nash helped the Lady Comets net second in the overall team standings. Ulroan rounded out the race’s top 10 spots with a time of 25:13. Nash was 15th overall at 26:06.

Toksook Bay’s Megan Friday made the state qualifier list by placing 11th with a time of 25:42.

The BRHS girls also walked away from the meet with an additional honor. The team netted the prestigious GPA award. The Lady Warriors’ team had a cumulative grade point average of 3.42.
