Dyment of Bethel places in top ten at Division II State XC Race

A Bethel runner cracked the top 10 in the Girls Division II State Cross Country finals in Anchorage this past weekend – the first Bethel racer to do so in recent history. Rosemarie Dyment, a freshman, placed 9th overall. Her time was 21:56.

Payton Boney, also of Bethel, finished with a time of 23:07, coming in at the 26th spot. Teammate Kyana Harpak also raced finishing at 24:13. Maya Komulainen, Jordan Klejka, Constance Albert, and Hannah Leinberger also competed at the state cross country finals for the Lady Warriors at the Bartlett High School Trails in Anchorage. There were over 60 state qualified runners in the event.

The Bethel Lady Warriors placed 5th overall.

Jayna Boonstra, daughter of Todd and Kelli Boonstra – formerly of Tununak also ran, taking the number 3 spot with a time of 20:23.

Five runners from Mt. Edgecumbe represented the Braves – Tessa Anderson nearly made the top ten placing 11th. Joining her were teammates Aries Bioff, Sarah Bahnke, Bessie Williams, and Jelsey Gologergen.

A pair of Sitka High runners took first and second place with only a one second difference. Anna Prussian of Sitka High, a senior, won the race at 20:01 and her teammate Clare Mullin, a sophomore, placed second with a time of 20:02.

Xiimara Salazar of Kotzebue took 12th, AwaLuk Nichols of Nome placed 18th, Lauren Kingstrom also of Nome took 25th, Marlene Burgett representing Galena took 38th, and Kiara Burnell and Kimberly Wolgemuth both of Barrow placed 48th and 49th respectively.

The Seward Seahawks took home the state title. Coming in second was the Grace Christian Lions, in third place were the Homer Lady Mariners. Placing 4th were the Sitka Wolves. In sixth place was Redington. The Mt. Edgecumbe Lady Braves took seventh.

On the boys side, Ned Peters of the Bethel Warriors was the fastest finisher for his team placing 16th with a time of 18:08. Teammate Sheldon Smith came in next in 29th position at 19:05. Finishing in the 39th spot was Paul Dyment, his time was 19:41. Liam Phelan also raced, placing 41st with a time of 19:46. Madden Cockroft came in at 44th place at 19:53 for the top five Bethel runners. Patricio Vasquez and Rory Peters also raced, placing 50th and 55th.

The Bethel Warriors placed 6th overall at the state meet.

Three runners represented the Mt. Edgecumbe Braves – Jacob Friske (36th place), Connor Journey (47th place) and Colton Paul of Kipnuk who placed 51st. His time was 20:50.

Also running in the race were Nome’s Orson Hoogendorn, Benjamin Milton, and Son Erikson. From Galena were Preston Kopp, Milo Huntington, Clint Kipp, Finn Hornfischer, Jonah Echo, Donovan Olin, and Daniel Holstrom.

David Sliwinski of Grace Christian won the event, his time was 15:55. Grace Christian won the team award, coming in second was Sitka, in third was Homer, then Kenai for fourth, and Anchorage Christian in 5th.

Gabriel Angaiak of Monroe Catholic took 21st with a time of 18:36.
